What Is the Chemical Etching Process?

The chemical etching process, also called photochemical machining (PCM), is a precise and cost-effective method of manufacturing complex metal components. It involves selectively removing metal using chemical solutions to create detailed and burr-free patterns—without mechanical force or heat.

Step-by-Step Chemical Etching Process

  1. Material Selection: Choose a suitable metal such as stainless steel, copper, aluminum, nickel, or titanium.
  2. Surface Cleaning: Clean the metal sheet to eliminate oils, oxides, or contaminants for optimal adhesion of photoresist.
  3. Photoresist Coating: Apply a UV-sensitive photoresist film evenly over the metal surface.
  4. UV Exposure: Place a photomask with the desired pattern over the sheet and expose it to ultraviolet light.
  5. Development: Develop the exposed photoresist to remove either the exposed or unexposed areas, depending on whether positive or negative resist is used.
  6. Chemical Etching: Immerse the sheet in an etching solution—commonly ferric chloride—to dissolve the unprotected metal areas.
  7. Stripping: Remove the remaining photoresist, revealing the final etched part with precision detail.
