Chemical etching, also known as photochemical machining (PCM), is a subtractive manufacturing process used to produce highly precise and intricate metal components. By using a photoresist mask and chemical etchants, this method selectively removes metal to form desired patterns without applying mechanical force.
The process begins by coating a metal sheet with a photosensitive resist. A phototool (design pattern) is then applied, and the sheet is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. The exposed areas are developed, and the metal is submerged in a chemical solution (such as ferric chloride) to etch away unprotected sections. Finally, the resist is stripped, leaving behind the finished metal part.
